Program: Alpamayo Climb in Peru

Jim Wiese scaled Alpamayo Mountain’s ice face in June.  An amazing feat!

This summer, Jim Wiese put the cover on his boat and spent a month trekking and climbing. He went to Peru with a team of 6 climbers attempting to summit Alpamayo, a steep, almost perfectly-formed pyramid of ice situated in the heart of Cordillera Blanca.  At 19,500 feet, it’s impressive shape and spectacularly fluted face make it a coveted summit for climbers.  Jim was fortunate to be one of 3 climbers on the team to successfully summit.  He will share his experiences and the challenges of climbing and mountaineering that has now taken him to 4 continents.

Program: The Rotary Foundation In keeping with our Foundation Month theme, Beth updated us on the latest news from The Rotary Foundation, including polio eradication efforts.  As TRF celebrates is 100th anniversary, we can all be proud that it is ranked as a top 3 foundation, distributing 100% of its donations.  In 2015, that TRF total was $216M.

The District Polio Eradicator award recognizes each club which has an average giving to PolioPlus of at least $40 per member.  Our club has been recognized as an ERADICATOR CLUB every year since the club was chartered in 2005.

Rotary-UN Celebration Mixes Business with Diplomacy

Outside the United Nations building in midtown Manhattan, stands an imposing sculpture of a man wielding a sword in one hand and raising a hammer with the other. It reflects a shared goal that Rotary and the United Nations celebrated at the organizations’ annual meeting on November 12: to use our strengths and tools to build a more peaceful and just world. The theme of this year’s Rotary Day at the United Nations, “Responsible Business, Resilient Societies,” emphasizes Rotary’s role as a global network of business leaders using the tools of their trades to build stronger, more prosperous communities.

In his introductory remarks, Rotary International President John Germ drew the crowd’s attention to the statue, “Let Us Beat Our Swords Into Ploughshares,” as he set the tone for the day, which included breakout sessions and keynote addresses on aspects of responsible business, or the philosophy that forprofit enterprise can contribute to positive social and economic development.

“Here is where the UN and Rotary International are working side by side, equipping communities with the tools they need, and empowering them with the will to use those tools far and wide,” he said.

Our Speaker: Randa Colbert,   Hiwassee College Dental Hygiene Program Director

Randa Colbert talked about Hiwassee College’s expanded Dental Hygiene Program which includes their new Mobile Dental Unit. Hoping to have the mobile lab on the road in January, the last remaining piece of equipment needed is a $16,500 generator. Right now they are $6,500 short.

Randa briefed us on the Hiwassee College Dental Hygiene program and their new mobile dental unit, that will expand student-learning experiences as they serve children, adults and senior citizens in Monroe and surrounding counties.  Their goal is to have the mobile unit out in the community at least twice per month, with the initial target being elementary students.  There are still a number of one-time expenses needed to get the unit fully functioning.  Our Board will be looking into what can be done to assist from our club foundation and District Grant funds.

Improving Access to Education through TRF

World Polio Day – Monday Oct 24

Rotary’s annual World Polio Day will bring together the biggest names in the global fight to eradicate polio. The Atlanta event will feature the Center for Disease Control Director Thomas Frieden, Time magazine Senior Editor Jeffrey Kluger, National Geographic writer Maryn McKenna, Rotary International President John F. Germ, and surprise guests.

“Rotarians’ continued support for global polio eradication efforts is critical,” says Frieden, who will give a global update on the campaign to end polio. “Once polio is eradicated, we have to continue to apply the lessons learned from its eradication to get to the next public health victory.”

Program: Tina updated the club on their mission to assist people living in Monroe County who are experiencing a crisis situation. Good Shepherd encourages families to strive for self-sufficiency and qualifies all those seeking services.

Our Speaker: Richard Cook, Author

Program: “Ignored Heroes of  World War II: The Manhattan Project Workers of Oak Ridge, Tennessee”

Richard Cook delivered a fabulous presentaion about the forgotten heroes who helped end WW II by working on the Manhatten Project at the ‘Secret City’ known as Oak Ridge today.

Richard’s books spotlights the details supporting Oak Ridge’s role in winning World War II. His book draws heavily on the hundreds of oral histories that have been placed online, offering a unique perspective.  His presentation included several fascinating slides that put the scale of this project into understandable images such as the K-25 plant pictured next to (and dwarfing) Neyland Stadium.

Rotary and Shelterbox on the Ground in Haiti

Hurricane Matthew tore through the impoverished island country on October 4, leaving hundreds dead and many more homeless.

The Category 4 storm affected an estimated 330,000 people in Haiti, including 6,400 who were moved to temporary shelters.  Extensive damage to main bridges and other transportation networks have left some areas cut off and vulnerable.  Torrential rains have resulted in flooding and landslides. And contaminated water supplies threaten to lead to a surge in cholera cases and other waterborne illnesses.

The contents of a Rotary Shelter Box

A ShelterBox response team of volunteers from Canada, England, New Zealand, and the US traveled to Port-au-Prince last week to assess the damage and decide how best to help people. ShelterBox, an independent charity, is Rotary’s project partner for disaster relief.

Working with Rotary members, government authorities, and other relief agencies, ShelterBox is focusing on the cholera outbreak in the southern region of the island and emergency shelter.  A shipment of ShelterBox supplies arrived in Les Cayes, in the south of Haiti, on Wednesday, which likely will be used to help health professionals screen and treat cholera victims.  With wind speeds reaching 155 miles per hour, Hurricane Matthew is considered the worst storm to make landfall in Haiti in more than 50 years.
