Program: Astronomy & Astrophotography
When we look at the skies from our yards, the starlight we see has been traveling for thousands of years to reach our eyes. Light from the closest star requires 4 years to reach us, but light from the closest galaxy requires 2.5 million years to get here. The Milky Way is our galaxy and is amazing to observe with our eyes, binoculars and telescopes.
Roy will discuss how he became an avid amateur astronomer and astrophotographer and provide some insight on star and planet formation. Pictures of Noquisi Uwatsi Observatory (his observatory in Tellico Village) and astrophotos will be presented.

● Harv entertained us with his T-BART rescue story of a Chilhowie Dam canoeist – 100 yards from a boat launch!
● Art just returned from a grand-kids visit in Birmingham.
● Maggie had a Mother’s Day “bucket list” trip to NYC – a gift from her son.
● Jim W. reported his mom had a stroke, but is doing OK with some minor physical impairment to be treated with PT.
● The Sharpe family will be converging on Dave’s mountain house this weekend for a noisy family reunion.
● Jim D. is off today to Ft. Payne, AL for his grand-daughter’s graduation.

Canada Contributes $40MM to Ending Polio
The government of Canada is providing C$40 million over three years in support of Pakistan’s polio eradication program. The funds will help the World Health Organization and UNICEF interrupt transmission of the wild poliovirus in Pakistan. Canada is the fifth-highest per capita donor to polio eradication, with over C$500 million committed to date. It coordinates its efforts closely with Rotary, matching Rotarians’ contributions during fundraising campaigns.
2017 RI Convention

Next year the Rotary International Convention will take place in Atlanta. Thousands of Rotarians from all over the world will travel to attend the convention. Seldom do we get an opportunity to attend this exciting event right in our own backyard, and I strongly encourage everyone in our district to try to attend. To make it even easier to attend we are planning to charter buses to Atlanta for the convention. Registration will open on May 28. If you register between May 28 and June 7, 2016, you can attend the entire convention for just $265. You will be able to register through the DACdb Calender.

The Citico Wildlife Wilderness is unlike any other “attraction” you’ve visited. Home to over 200 grazing animals from all over the world, including several endangered species, it’s the brainchild of Tedford. Cleve shared his life’s story and the following of his passion. His journey took him from TN to NYC and back, with numerous ventures along the way. He began his park property development in 1984 and finally opened it to the public four years ago. One of his goals is to provide a cure for “nature deficit disorder.”
This past weekend, an estimated 500 patients were treated at a Sequoyah High School Remote Area Medical (RAM) Clinic. The clinic offered free dental, vision and medical services on a first-come, first-serve basis, with licensed healthcare professionals providing these services free of charge.
