Our Next Meeting: Thursday, June 29, Noon at First Baptist Church of Tellico Village

Our Last Meeting
Speaker: Debi Tuggle, UT Trauma Nusre, RN, CEN
Topic: “Stop the Bleed – Save a Life” Training Course
We were pleased to have Debi Tuggle of the University of Tennessee Medical Center share how UT Med Center is taking part in a national campaign designed to empower bystanders to act quickly and help save lives in the event of a tragedy.
The focus of “Stop the Bleed – Save a Life” is to remind people that uncontrolled bleeding is the number one cause of preventable death from trauma. UT Medical Center Nurse Debi Tuggle says in the wake of incidents like the shooting in Alexandria, Virginia; Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, the Pulse nightclub shooting; or even severe storms, the initial response will be bystanders.
We learned that through a Rotary Grant secured by the Knoxville Rotary Club, Debi brought her “Stop the Bleed” course to Zimbawe, Africa. They continue to train groups there via Skype.
Debi shared that we, once trained, and even if minimally injured, can act as a rescuer. Every bystander has a set of tools at all times to control hemorrhage: his or her hands. A person who is bleeding can die from blood loss within five minutes, so it’s important to stop bleeding quickly.
We realize this is an excellent program and we will schedule the course to be given here in August.
Pigeon Forge Rotary Club Dedicates New Park for Children with Disabilities
Before Rotarian Simon Bradbury came to Tellico Village as their Recreation Director, Simon had put into motion the expansion of the Rotary Playground at Wear Park along Route 321 in Pigeon Forge. On Wednesday, June 22, Simon along with John & Sue Everson made the trek to be part of the new park dedication.
Speaker: Dave Case, National Key Account Management – Bayer Crop Science
Program: Our newest club member delved deep into his career with Bayer Crop Science, one of the world’s leading innovative companies in the areas of seeds, crop protection and nonagricultural pest control. Dave first talked about the importance of honey bees and the fact that the bee population in the world is strong and growing in spite of attacks by disease and parasites over the past 10 years.
Dave stressed how large companies like Bayer are planning to help farmers meet future food demands as the world’s population continues to grow. He give us insight as to what “sustainabilty” is and gave us a better understanding of “Organic” vs. “Conventional” farming.
We also learned that there are only 9 GMO foods found at our markets: Apples, Potatoes, Corn, Canola, Alfalfa, Soybean, Rainbow Papaya, Sugar Beet, Summer Squash. The remaining fruits and vegetables we buy and eat are non-GMO.
Attendance: 14 Members, 2 Guests from Germany and 1 Visitor
We were privledged to have a visiting Rotarian from the Rotary Club of Bad Bergzabern, Silke Hohaus-Wensauer. Silke brought her close friend Klaudia Sippel-Mahr with her as they spent 2 weeks with Silke’s God-parents who live in Tellico Village. We enjoyed a wonderful time with them as Silke shared that she is a bee farmer herself.
