With over 36 years of non-profit experience, Cindy Black will help take the Good Samaritan Center to higher levels of service to residents in need in Loudon County.

Program: The Good Samaritan Center of Loudon County is a private, non-profit assistance ministry serving the emergency needs of low-income families in Loudon County through cooperative efforts of churches, civic groups, local governments, utility companies, social service agencies and individuals. This was our club’s first chance to meet and get acquainted with new Director Cindy Black.

In Memory of Diane Decker

Diane Decker – her love for Rotary and club support will be missed!

Diane Decker, wife of Rotarian Jim Decker, passed away suddenly during the early morning hours of April 22. The club offers our prayers and condolences to Jim and his family.

This year’s District Conference was held in Chattanooga on April 21 & 22.  Our club contingent attending on Saturday included PP Sue Everson, President John Everson, Claudine Miller, Jeff Miller and PAG Joan McIntee.

Jill Ogle gave a passionate talk about our need to be aware of the early signs of someone having a stroke. Every minute counts to get help as quickly as possible. Always call 911 first.

Speaker:  Jill Ogle, BSN, RN – Nurse Manager CCU/MED-SURG Fort Loudoun Medical Center
Program:  Stroke – Jill presented on the two major types of stroke (ischemic & hemorrhagic) and their unique symptoms, interventions, timeliness, and cost of Stroke to the individual and our national healthcare system. Everyone should remember the acronym “FAST” – Face/Arm & Leg/Speech/Time. Early recognition is very important, as time is crucial for effective early intervention treatments. Jill also shared her personal encounter with her own mother’s stroke.

● Joan reminded us of a significant anniversary.  The results of the Salk polio vaccine field trial were announced April 12, 1955.

We’re Close to Eradicating Polio, But…
When was the last polio case in Europe? If you guessed 2002, the year the region was certified polio-free, you’re wrong.  The last time polio affected a child in Europe was 2015.  Two Ukrainian children were diagnosed with paralytic polio, and that likely means that many more were infected and didn’t show symptoms. At least one Western news outlet deemed the outbreak “crazy” — but the reality is that no place on Earth is safe from polio until the disease is eradicated everywhere.  Ukraine had fully vaccinated only 50 percent of its children against polio, and low immunization rates are a recipe for an outbreak. In this case, a rare mutation in the weakened strain used in the oral polio vaccine was able to spread because so many children had not been vaccinated. To stop it from progressing, the country needed to administer 6 million vaccines through an emergency program.  “Rotary was there at the beginning of the global effort to eradicate polio,” says International PolioPlus Committee Chair Michael K. McGovern. “It would be unfortunate if Rotary isn’t there at the finish line. We’ve done too much; we’ve made too much progress to walk away before we finish.”  But … we still need another $1.5 billion to finish the job.

Mary Thom Adams of ETTAC is holding a soft, stuffed, electric toy that has been modified by Knox Makers so a child with disabilities can easily play with it.

Program: East Tennessee Technology Access Center (ETTAC)
ETTAC was started in 1988 by a group of parents, adults with disabilities, business people and service providers in the community who held an uncommon belief in the power of technology to help people with disabilities reach their goals.
They help people with disabilities gain knowledge about and access to assistive technology devices.  These devices help people with disabilities gain education and employment skills, perform activities of daily living, and lead more independent, productive lives. ETTAC’s assistive technology equipment is used for assessment and training, and some devices may also be available for loan.   Check out their ETTAC web page.

Doug Laney is president of Knox Makers in Knoxville where engineers, inventors, and artists have come together to create special devices and other innovation things to help people with disabilities live more productive lives.

Knox Makers is housed in the same facility and works together with ETTAC. They modify toys for disabled kids as well as developing adaptive technologies.  Learn more by checking out their Knox Makers Facebook page

New Member Induction – Welcome Dave!
The March 30 meeting included the induction of new club member Dave Case. He was a former member of the Rotary Club of Urbana, OH from 1983-1988.  He and his wife Dorothy have relocated to WindRiver.  Dave is nearing retirement from Bayer Crop Science, where he is National Account Manager. If you missed this meeting, please be sure to welcome Dave to our Tellico Lake family.  Our roster is now at 21 members.

Program: Club Assembly

It was a productive club assembly as we kicked- off preparations for the 2017 Tour de Tellico. There was some brainstorming on how to improve this year’s event, the addition of “coupons” to the next Activity Guide, our charity “Benefit” which could be a dinner or an entertainment event, and the need for more “activity” related items for the silent auction. Sponsorship forms were also distributed so we can all get an early jump on securing sponsors for this year’s event/guide.

Business Leader Samuel Owori Will Become First Ugandan to Head Rotary International

Samuel “Sam” Owori of Kampala, Uganda has been confirmed President-Nominee of Rotary International for the year 2018-19.

As a member of the Rotary Club Kampala, Uganda for 38 years, Owori says, “Rotary has become a way of life for me – with the intrinsic value and core belief in mutual responsibility and concern for one another as a cornerstone. I feel immense satisfaction knowing that through Rotary, I’ve helped someone live better.”

During his one-year term as Rotary’s 108th president beginning on July 1, 2018, Owori will focus on building membership worldwide and increasing visibility and understanding of Rotary.
