Our Speaker: Gerald Augustus, Civil War Author and Researcher

Our favorite Civil War historian,. Gerald Augustus, returned to tell some great stories about the colorful officers that came from East Tennessee and served for the Union as well as the Confederacy.

Program: The Civil War:  Many famous officers came from our local area here in East Tennessee. Gerald touched on the stories of Parsons Brownlow, John L. Vonn, Goldman Bryson, Hugh Lawson White, and David M. Key.  For further reading, Gerald recommended the book:  Divided Loyalties: Fort Sanders And The Civil War In East Tennessee (2nd Edition) by Digby Seymour, East Tennessee Historical Society.

Help Wanted: Newsletter Editor

After five years and almost 200 issues, your newsletter editor announced that he is retiring from his position at the end of the Rotary year. If anyone is interested in carrying on as either printed or electronic bulletin editor, please let President Everson or PE Dickson know ASAP.

The Rotary Foundation Centennial

In 2017, our Rotary Foundation turns 100. That’s a century of Rotary members changing lives and improving communities all over the world. And that’s definitely something worth celebrating.  Through our Foundation, Rotary members have supported thousands of projects to provide clean water, fight disease, promote peace, provide basic education, and grow local economies. We’ve also been a leader in the fight to eradicate polio worldwide.  Make sure that people in our community know about the vital work of Rotary and its Foundation.  Rotary is marking the centennial with a year of festivities that began in Korea at the 2016 Rotary Convention and culminates at the Atlanta convention 100th Birthday Party on June 14.
